Personal, Social and Health Education
At Bisley, we want to nurture all children in developing their confidence, well-being and social skills. Upon leaving Bisley, all children will be respectful, active citizens with a great sense of responsibility and resilience. The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum that is accessible for all and promote equality of opportunity so that all children can thrive together, understanding that difference is positive, not negative, and that individual characteristics make people unique. All children will leave Bisley equipped with a good understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.
Lessons: To ensure all children are receiving the most supportive, nurturing and appropriate PSHE curriculum, we follow the SCARF scheme of work from Coram Life Education. All PSHE sessions provide children with opportunities for discussion and debate. The spiral curriculum begins in Nursery and follows the children through to Year 6.
Visitors: On a yearly basis, we book in to have the ‘LifeBus’ come and visit the children to really bring their PSHE learning to life! In Spring 2021, the LifeBus visited the children in years 2 – 6 and this year, in Spring 2022, it will be visiting the children from Reception to Year 6.
The wider curriculum: All subjects make links to PSHE, British Values (BV) and children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. Our 4 core values (Love, Hope, Respect and Courage) and our Thinkasaurus family (Growth Mindset) all link well to support children during their PSHE learning.
Displays across the school: Growth Mindset, Values and ‘Chance to Shine’ display boards all consistently nurture children in developing themselves as confident and resilient individuals.
Collective Worship: Each day consists of special time together to stimulate, challenge and nurture children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) curiosity and development.
Zones of Regulation: From nursery all the way through to year 6, we use Zones of Regulation to support children in identifying their emotions. At an age-appropriate level, the children learn which zone (blue, green, yellow or red) their emotions sit in and a variety of strategies that they could use to help themselves move into the green zone.
Children will show a healthy outlook towards school and the wider community. They will become healthy, resilient and responsible members of society; they will be prepared and well equipped for their journey through life. Children will be able to accurately identify their emotions and effectively use strategies to support emotional self-regulation. All children will leave Bisley as positive, empowered citizens in a forever changing community.
