History

Intent

Working in conjunction with the other humanities departments we have put together a curriculum map that arranges the topics required by the National Curriculum into a coherent progression from EYFS to Year 6. This is intended to allow all students to develop the key vocabulary and skills that will ensure they can begin their next educational stage; confident they have the tools to approach the learning they will face. We aim to foster a genuine interest in and understanding of the relevance of history amongst our students. We intend to do this by revisiting key concepts such as trade and power each year, from in KS2, and relating these ideas to current thinking in history and events in the wider world.

Implementation

At Bisley, we teach 3 units of history in each year group. We have been thorough in our curriculum design, aiming to ensure every year group’s learning builds upon the previous curriculum delivery. The STEM faculty have tried, where possible, to link history units to both geography and science units as we believe that children gain a deeper understanding when their learning is linked.

Impact

It is our aim to ensure that, by the time children leave Bisley they have a well-developed understanding of the course of human civilization, from the advent of humans in Stone Age Europe to the reign of our current monarch. Students will have gained an understanding of how historians use primary and secondary sources to investigate events of the past. Perhaps most importantly our students will have developed the skill to place themselves in the minds of people from a different age, using empathy to access a real understanding of why history, as the study of humanity through time, is vital to us all.
