Science
Intent
At Bisley Church of England Primary School it is our vision to instil a lifelong love of science within our pupils. We work hard to provide a rich and varied curriculum which challenges and meets the needs of all of our children. From Early Years up to Year 6 our pupils will build up a body of concepts and knowledge, largely through exploration, where they are encouraged to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They will learn how science can be used to explain what is happening, predict how things will behave and analyse causes. Where possible, links will be made to other subjects which aids children’s knowledge and understanding, not only of the topic they are studying, but of the world around them.
Implementation
At our school we follow the ‘Science Programmes of Study’ as laid out in the National Curriculum. Science is taught weekly, or in blocks if needed, to ensure coverage and progression. The STEM faculty have linked the science, history and geography units, where possible, as we believe that children gain a deeper understanding when links can be made.
For each unit there is a Learning Journey and these will aid teachers in three main ways. They will help to ensure: that lessons build on prior learning; that all statutory requirements (both in terms of knowledge and working scientifically) are met; and, that lessons are hands-on and engaging.
Children will be assessed informally at the beginning of a unit to assess whether they need a recap on work previously taught. At the end of a unit they will receive a more formal assessment. Here they will be graded as either ‘emerging, expected or exceeding’. When appropriate, children’s scientific skills will also be assessed during the unit in the same way, and we will award the children an overall grade at the end of the academic year.
Impact
The children will have:
· A wide variety of scientific knowledge and investigative skills – they will know more, remember more and understand more of the science curriculum.
· A richer vocabulary which will enable them to articulate their understanding of taught concepts.
· Higher aspirations and a love of learning of all things science.
